Microsoft’s AI Lab (MSI) is building the models that sit at the foundation of everything we do, and the world is paying attention. This is a rare seat at the table: you’ll own the narrative for how MSI tells its story externally, shaping how researchers, customers, media, and the broader public understand what we’re building and why it matters.
This isn’t a support role. You’ll be one of the primary writers behind MSI’s external voice, from model launch campaigns and website copy to long-form thought leadership. You’ll work alongside a lead storyteller (your manager) in the MAI Creative Studio and collaborate directly with researchers, PMs, and executives to translate highly technical work into stories that move people.
How We Work
You’ll sit on a small writing team embedded within a large, fast-moving product organization. This means significant autonomy, direct access to leadership and researchers, and real ownership over the work — alongside the resources, reach, and cross-functional support that come with Microsoft.
Your manager is a lead storyteller with deep Copilot, brand, and product storytelling experience. The two of you will function as complements — brand system and model narrative — with a shared commitment to quality and a clean division of ownership.
Portfolio Note
We expect to see range. Show us something that required you to understand something hard before you could write about it. Show us a piece of launch copy you’re proud of. Show us something short that landed.
We’re less interested in volume than in evidence of craft, judgment, and a point of view.
Responsibilities
Own the MAI narrative
- Lead external storytelling for MAI model launches, research milestones, and product moments end-to-end
- Develop and maintain MAI’s editorial voice — distinct, credible, and human — across all content types
- Build and maintain a running narrative architecture: the key messages, proof points, and stories that anchor how MAI communicates externally
Write across the full content spectrum
- Website & launch copy — hero narratives, landing pages, product messaging frameworks
- Blog & thought leadership — long-form editorial that establishes MAI’s point of view in the AI research landscape
- Video scripts & social — short-form content, launch trailers, explainers, and platform-native posts
Operate as a strategic partner, not just a writer
- Partner with researchers and technical leads to deeply understand what MSI is building — then decide what the world should care about and why
- Bring a GTM mindset: you think about audience, timing, channel, and impact, not just word count
- Collaborate with design, comms, and product marketing on integrated launch moments
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years proven writing or content design experience AND a certification, degree, or training in English, Writing, Human-centered Design, Literature, or related field OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) project leadership experience.
Preferred
- 5–8 years of professional writing experience, with meaningful time spent in AI, deep tech, or research-driven organizations
- A portfolio that spans formats — not just blog posts, but launch copy, exec comms, scripts, or campaign narratives
- Genuine technical fluency in AI/ML: you can read a research paper, follow a model architecture conversation, and know enough to ask the right questions
- A track record of making complex, abstract ideas feel clear and consequential, without dumbing them down
- Strong editorial judgment: you know what the story is before anyone tells you, and you can defend your choices
- Experience writing for or about a model lab or AI research organization (e.g. Anthropic, DeepMind, OpenAI, FAIR, Google Brain)
- Experience writing CEO or C-suite communications at scale
- Comfort operating in ambiguity: this role will define its own shape, and that’s a feature, not a bug
- Interest in growing into a leadership role over time as the MAI content function expands
