Overview

If you are energized by shaping the future of AI-powered experiences and have the craft and systems thinking to operate at scale, we want to hear from you.

The Microsoft AI Design & Research team is building the next generation of intelligent web experiences across Copilot, Edge, Bing, and emerging surfaces. We design cohesive, scalable, and human-centered systems that reach billions of people. This is not incremental UX work. This is foundational experience design in an AI-first world.

We are seeking a Principal Product Designer who operates at both system and execution levels. You are fluent in emerging AI workflows, comfortable prototyping beyond static mocks, and capable of defining experience architecture that scales across products. You bring exceptional visual and interaction craft, deep expertise in design systems, and the ability to align cross-functional leaders around a coherent experience vision.

This is a principal-level individual contributor role for someone who sets direction, raises quality bars, and builds the connective tissue between strategy, systems, and shipped product.  This role is a hybrid position, in office 4x a week in either Mountain View, CA, Redmond, WA or New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive end-to-end experience strategy for complex, high-visibility product areas
  • Translate AI capabilities into intuitive, trustworthy, and human-centered interactions
  • Prototype rapidly across fidelity levels, including interactive, motion-rich, and coded explorations when needed
  • Lead system-level thinking and evolve design systems to ensure coherence, flexibility, and long-term scalability
  • Establish experience principles and patterns that scale across teams and surfaces
  • Partner deeply with product and engineering leaders to shape roadmaps, clarify tradeoffs, and deliver cohesive experiences
  • Elevate visual craft, motion, interaction detail, and micro-interactions across the organization
  • Navigate ambiguity to invent v1 experiences while balancing experimentation with sustainable systems design
  • Influence cross-team alignment and drive quality at scale across multiple product pillars
  • Champion accessibility, inclusive design, and usability as non-negotiable standards

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design OR Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).

Required Qualifications

  • 6-8+ years of experience designing complex consumer products at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to lead ambiguous, zero-to-one initiatives and bring them to production
  • Deep expertise in design systems, scalable interaction models, and cross-surface experience coherence
  • Strong visual and interaction craft, including motion and advanced prototyping
  • Fluency with modern AI tools and emerging design workflows
  • Experience with vibe coding
  • Comfort experimenting with coded prototypes or adjacent technical exploration when needed
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive alignment across disciplines
  • Exceptional storytelling skills and ability to articulate experience strategy clearly and persuasively
  • Resume must include a link to design portfolio and password if applicable
