As a Member of Technical Staff – Machine Learning, you will work to create LLM models for general purpose capabilities and for products. You may be responsible for developing new methods to train core LLM capabilities (including agentive), collecting data, evaluating LLMs, creating data flywheels, tooling for LLM training/evals, writing production quality code, and creating new user-facing features. You should be comfortable creating Reinforcement Learning data, fine tuning, or training classifiers or engineering prompts to create SOTA foundation models and support Microsoft products and the Cloud API. We’re looking for someone with experience in machine learning, software engineering, as well as an effective communicator and great teammate. The right candidate takes the initiative, is user-centered and enjoys building world-class AI experiences and products in a fast-paced environment.

Starting January 26, 2026, MAI employees are expected to work from a designated Microsoft office at least four days a week if they live within 50 miles (U.S.) or 25 miles (non-U.S., country-specific) of that location. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.

This role is part of Microsoft AI’s Superintelligence Team. Responsibilities
  • Own and pursue a research agenda to improve model capability and performance for agentive application.
  • Collaborate closely with the other research and product teams, from pretraining to model hosting to unlock new model capabilities.
  • Build robust evaluations for tracking modeling improvements.
  • Design, implement, test, and debug code across our research stack.


Qualifications

Required Qualification 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience. 

Preferred Qualification 

  • Master’s degree  in Computer Science or related technical field AND 1+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience .
  • Doctorate in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Human-Centered AI or related field and experience in  (e.g., finetuning models with supervision or reinforcement learning, understanding and fixing data quality and curation, working with collaborators on creating new products).



Software Engineering IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 – $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 – $215,400 per year.

  • Develop and Deploy Models: Design, develop, and implement machine learning models for high-performance recommendation systems and personalized feeds. Candidates without direct experience in recommendations and ranking are still encouraged to apply if they possess exceptional technical skills in other areas of machine learning. 
  • Large Language Model Expertise: Leverage large language models (LLMs) to create scalable, intelligent solutions for content understanding, user engagement, and relevance ranking. 
  • Experimentation and Analysis: Drive data-driven experimentation using A/B testing, advanced analytics, and statistical techniques to identify growth opportunities and refine algorithms. 
  • Infrastructure Optimization: Develop and optimize pipelines, tools, and infrastructure to support real-time decision-making, personalization, and predictive analytics. 
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor team members and foster collaboration within cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and designers.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of experience building and deploying ML models in production environments. 
  • Strong coding skills in Python and experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow). 
  • Familiarity with data processing tools (e.g., Spark, Pandas) and cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS). 
  • Experience with classification, recommendation, or personalization systems. 
  • Experience using large language models (LLMs) for machine learning and AI applications. 
  • Hands-on experience in growth engineering, driving improvements in user acquisition, engagement, and retention.  
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn. 
  • Expertise in personalization strategies and user behavior modeling. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently design solutions to complex challenges. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Lead the end-to-end development of large-scale CTR and other user response signal models for Search and Display ads.
  • Design, prototype, and ship cutting-edge ML architectures (deep models, multi-task, transformer-based, LLM-assisted, multimodal).

Technical & Engineering Execution

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.

Additional or preferred qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).
  • 2+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.
  • 5+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

Applied Sciences IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 – $304,200 per year.
