At Microsoft AI, we are on a mission to develop the most cutting-edge algorithms for post-training large language models (LLMs) and ship those models to millions of users using Copilot every day. 
 
The AI Post-Training team at Microsoft AI is responsible for all aspects of post-training and improving our pre-trained models to advance the state-of-the-art on a wide variety of internal and external benchmarks. Our goal is to push our models’ capabilities in reasoning and instruction following, math, code, and tool use and agentic tasks, among many other areas.
 
This role involves contributions to all stages of the post-training process: driving data collection and acquisition, building evaluations of model capabilities, and applying advanced reward modeling and RL techniques to develop and improve the post-training recipe. We work on the bleeding edge and leverage the most powerful pretrained models and algorithms for our needs. We are an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists, learning from each other and collaborating to create the best models.

Responsibilities
  • Develop data collection, evaluation, and post-training methods for models.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python 
  • OR equivalent experience.  
  • Have experience with reward modeling, RL, or other post-training techniques.
 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python  
  • OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python  
  • OR equivalent experience.  
  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale AI.  
  • Passionate about conversational AI and its deployment.  
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers.    
  • Passion for learning new technologies and staying up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in AI.   
  • Proven ability to collaborate and contribute to a positive, inclusive work environment, fostering knowledge sharing and growth within the team.   


Software Engineering IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 – $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 – $258,000 per year.

Software Engineering IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year.   • Develop algorithms, model architectures, data mixtures, and scaling laws for large-scale training using a rigorous data-driven approach grounded in meticulous ablations

Responsibilities
  • Drive projects and programs related to compute infrastructure, including forecasting and allocation resource needs like compute, storage, network. 
  • Collaborate with product teams, engineers, researchers, and external partners to identify gaps and drive timelines toward resolution and mitigation. 

  • Leverage data and analytics to define metrics, set baselines and targets for fleet efficiency & optimize. 

  • Advocate for AI team’s resource needs with exec and working level partners across Microsoft. 

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and growth. 

  • Own the status of key compute projects, proactively identifying risks and proposing solutions to ensure timely delivery. 

  • Communicate program strategies, progress, and results to executive leadership and key stakeholders, advocating for quality and efficiency within the team. 

  • Work closely with teams on infrastructure, pre-training, post-training, and product to drive resource allocations and configurations. 

  • Advance the AI frontier responsibly.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 6+ years’ experience in technical program management, infrastructure engineering, AI/ML, or product development 
    OR equivalent experience. 

  • 6+ years’ experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects. 

Preferred Qualifications

Responsibilities
  • Drive projects and programs related to compute infrastructure, including forecasting and allocation resource needs like compute, storage, network. 
  • Collaborate with product teams, engineers, researchers, and external partners to identify gaps and drive timelines toward resolution and mitigation. 

  • Leverage data and analytics to define metrics, set baselines and targets for fleet efficiency & optimize. 

  • Advocate for AI team’s resource needs with exec and working level partners across Microsoft. 

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and growth. 

  • Own the status of key compute projects, proactively identifying risks and proposing solutions to ensure timely delivery. 

  • Communicate program strategies, progress, and results to executive leadership and key stakeholders, advocating for quality and efficiency within the team. 

  • Work closely with teams on infrastructure, pre-training, post-training, and product to drive resource allocations and configurations. 

  • Advance the AI frontier responsibly.



Qualifications

We are seeking Data Research Engineers to join our Multimodal team, where we are building the next generation of foundation models across vision, language, audio, and beyond. If you are passionate about designing and curating high-quality datasets to power frontier AI models, this role is for you.

In this role, you’ll work at the intersection of data and innovation—collaborating with scientists, engineers, and annotators to curate, analyze, and evaluate diverse multimodal data sources critical to model development. You will lead efforts to:

  • Improve dataset quality and integrity
  • Understand data-driven model behaviors
  • Align datasets with ethical and societal values

Responsibilities
  • Create high-quality datasets for training and evaluation; run experiments on new datasets (data ablations) to assess their impact and determine the most effective data.
  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines for multimodal ingestion, preprocessing, filtering, and annotation.
  • Analyze real-world multimodal datasets to assess quality, diversity, relevance, and identify areas for improvement.
  • Build lightweight tools and workflows for dataset auditing, visualization, and versioning.
  • Collaborate with Safety, Ethics, and Governance teams to ensure datasets meet standards for quality, privacy, and responsible AI practices.
  • Embody our culture and values.
