We are building large-scale, Azure-based intelligence platform that transforms complex data into high-quality and rich actionable insights to Microsoft Advertising stakeholders. The system integrates advanced machine learning models with emerging agentic capabilities powered by large language models (LLMs) to model recommendations, automate analysis, generate contextual summaries, and streamline workflows across organizational tools. As a Senior Applied Scientist, you will lead the development of these Machine Learning solutions leveraging SOTA technologies in GenAI to build predictive models for generating recommendations, detecting anomalies, generating automated insights with reasoning and ensuring the platform delivers accurate, actionable intelligence at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and implementation of machine learning models for recommendations, anomaly detection, and actionable insights.
  • Drive experimentation and validation of models. Mentor junior scientists and contribute to model governance and Responsible AI practices.
  • Partner with engineering and BI teams to operationalize insights into dashboards and alerting systems.
  • Advance feature adoption scoring and health check analytics through data-driven approaches.
  • Engineer optimal prompts for various LLM calls, using chain-of-thought and other advanced techniques.
  • Fine-tune SLMs to efficiently scale the solution to millions of advertisers.
  • Generate account planning guidance, tailored talking points, pitch assets, follow ups using agentic orchestration.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing machine learning or statistical models to solve real-world problems (in industry or academic projects), including building and validating algorithms such as regressions, classifiers, or clustering models.
  • Proficiency in programming for data science (e.g. using Python or R for data analysis and modeling) and experience with data querying languages (e.g. SQL).
  • Big Data & Distributed Computing: Hands-on experience with large-scale data processing using tools like Apache Spark or Azure Databricks for training and inference workflows.
  • Advanced Analytics: Skilled in time-series analysis and anomaly detection techniques (e.g., ARIMA, isolation forests) applied to business contexts for actionable insights.
  • LLMs & Domain Adaptation: Practical experience with prompt engineering, fine-tuning GPT-like models, and applying LLMs in domain-heavy areas (healthcare, agriculture, social sciences) while ensuring privacy and Responsible AI compliance.

Microsoft AI is building the next generation of frontier models that power Copilot and other large-scale AI experiences. The Post-Training team is responsible for transforming powerful pretrained models into robust, aligned, and high-performing systems used by millions of people worldwide. 

Our work focuses on improving general quality, instruction following, coding and math ability, tool use, agentic behaviors, personality, and other critical model capabilities. We operate across the full post-training lifecycle — from data generation and curation, to evaluation and diagnostics, to reward modeling and reinforcement learning. 

We are a small, highly autonomous team that works closely with pre-training, product, and engineering partners to rapidly iterate on ideas, run large-scale experiments, and safely advance model capabilities. Each team member owns meaningful parts of the post-training pipeline and has direct access to the compute, data, and decision-making needed to move quickly from insight to production.

Responsibilities
  • Design evaluations of advanced model capabilities and use them to drive rapid, high-signal iteration loops 

  • Work with vendors to produce high quality evaluation and training data 

  • Build data pipelines to produce high quality evaluation and training data 

  • Build data flywheels to hill-climb on model weaknesses, using data from various surfaces where our models are deployed 

  • Ensure optimal quality, quantity and coverage of data across our post-training stages 

  • Run post-training experiments and ablations to produce models that climb our evals

We’re Looking For People Who: 

 

  • Have deep experience with LLMs, either training them or applying them in production 

  • Have developed production-scale data pipelines for synthesizing, curating, or processing large quantities of data 

  • Can design, run, and interpret large-scale ML experiments with careful statistical and empirical reasoning. 

  • Possess strong generalist engineering and mathematical skills. 

  • Have clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, engineers and other disciplines. 

  • Bonus skills: Demonstrated SOTA results in any area of large-scale training, inference, or evaluation.

  • Solid understanding of technical support issues required. Must have sufficient technical depth to communicate with development and other internal organizations at a peer level.
  • Working with data science team members, understanding their workflows, and translating them into specific requirements as new features for the platform.

Responsibilities
  • Create technical content (tutorials, sample apps, blog posts, videos) that demonstrates real-world uses and best practices for the company’s platform or APIs. 

  • Organize and deliver live presentations, workshops, ,webinars, and internal events to drive awareness and practical adoption. 

  • Maintain and contribute to developer-facing documentation, SDKs, command-line tools, and code examples to improve onboarding and reduce friction.

  • Measure and report on developer metrics (adoption, retention, active usage, contributions) and craft narratives to show business impact.

Qualifications

Required

Responsibilities
  • Design and build core platform services for scalable training and evaluation, including cluster orchestration, job scheduling, data and compute pipelines, and artifact management.
  • Standardize containerized workflows by maintaining Docker images, CI/CD, and runtime configurations; advocate for best practices in security, reproducibility, and cost efficiency.
  • Implement end-to-end observability and operations through metrics, tracing, logging, dashboard development, monitoring, and automated alerts for model training and platform health (using Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
  • Architect and operate services on Azure cloud platforms, managing infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Helm), secrets, networking, and storage.

  • Design and develop large-scale, distributed systems—including CPU and GPU ranking platforms—to support real-time processing of millions of ad requests per second with high efficiency, extensibility, diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability.
