Overview

Microsoft AI is looking for a Member of Technical Staff, Inference Systems Research to help build the next generation of AI infrastructure powering frontier model development. The Inference Systems team is an applied research team that builds and maintains the infrastructure that runs Microsoft’s frontier models. We partner with researchers to efficiently run models in RL, synthetic data generation, evals, production, and more on one of the largest compute fleets in the world.

The team is vertically integrated, owning everything from kernels to inference algorithms, model architecture co-design, ASIC co-design, distributed systems, and profiling and testing tools. Much of our research focus is on optimizing the reinforcement learning loop. We are embedded directly in Microsoft AI’s research org to work as closely as possible with researchers.

This role could be a great match for you if you:

  • Understand modern generative AI architectures and how to optimize them for inference.
  • Are familiar with the internals of open-source inference frameworks like vLLM and SGLang.
  • Value clear communication, improving team processes, and being a supportive team player.
  • Are results-oriented, have a bias toward action, and enjoy owning problems end-to-end.
  • Have or can quickly gain familiarity with modern Python and its tooling, PyTorch, Nvidia GPU kernel programming and optimization, Infiniband, and NVLink.

Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
